EQUINOX
MOVIE SYNOPSIS
In a community where real men are increasingly hard to
find, 18 year-old Malachi joins a ‘rites of passage’
program to learn the true definition of manhood. What he
learns is put to the test when his girlfriend resists
his growth, his mother abuses his father, his sister’s
provocative lifestyle endangers her safety, and he’s
asked to join a revolution against the local radio
station.
PRODUCTION
NOTES
The director, Baayan Bakari, held a casting call
five years ago for the film, but was unable to find an
actor for the lead role. Therefore, he postponed making
EQUINOX and instead circulated a script in Los Angeles
called SUMMER REIGN, which got the attention of Sean
Patrick Thomas (Save the Last Dance, Barbershop) and
Kerry Washington (Ray, I Think I Love My Wife). After
producers asked him to change the story from a drama to
a comedy, because “black dramas” don’t make money,
Baayan Bakari was determined to make a film by hook or
by crook. But it was destiny. Will E. Chapman, a young
man he had auditioned five years earlier was now ready
for the role.
